Familiar with BD-Live features on Blu-ray? Dreamer takes BD-Live one step further, making it into an interactive marketing and e-commerce tool that can generate incremental revenue, while still remaining consumer friendly.
“Dreamer’s BIDDLE™ technology utilizes any broadband-connected Blu-ray player to enable direct-to-TV broadcasting,” explains Dr. Won Baek, President and CEO of Dreamer. “Our technology creates a complementary delivery mechanism for broadcasters, movie studios, record labels and other content distributors. It allows them to utilize their deep libraries of content to generate additional revenue streams by sending music, games, exclusive access events, advertising, e-commerce and social networking more directly to consumers’ TVs.”
Technicolor evidently agrees. The company is utilizing the BIDDLE platform to augment its comprehensive portfolio of digital services, with online and disc-based direct-to-TV solutions for Blu-ray. Dreamer’s other customers include Korea Telecom, CJ CableNet and L2Digital. The BIDDLE platform is also being built into Blu-ray players beginning this year.
Dreamer’s BIDDLE platform is a thin-client solution, which essentially means that a content distributor has full control of when, how and what content is delivered. Content owners can broadcast their content and services to consumers anywhere in the world, using only a residential broadband connection. Dreamer’s technology essentially turns a BD-Live player into a globally accessible HD set-top box.
Baek explains that the consumer experience is similar to using a DVD player. Consumers browse an on-screen menu using their remotes and then access what they want to watch. There is no need for a PC or a dedicated set-top box. Because with Dreamer’s technology, consumers are not required to perform any updates, there are no lengthy downloads, and the disc starts up quickly.
Dreamer’s customers can choose one of two easy ways to deploy the BIDDLE technology. They can distribute Blu-ray discs with the BIDDLE code on them; when inserted into a player, the disc can automatically access their broadcasting channels. The other option is to send content directly to a broadband-connected Blu-ray player. A player with the BIDDLE code embedded in it can automatically access online content channels and services. Either option allows content owners to provide a superior consumer experience while maintaining full control over the presentation and distribution of their content.
Blu-ray player manufacturers can also benefit from Dreamer’s technology, which allows them to differentiate their players at retail—with tangible value to consumers, but without increasing the players’ bill of materials.
“Really, everyone in the Blu-ray chain benefits from our technology,” Baek explains, “from the silicon designer who offers reference designs for Blu-ray, to the manufacturer, content distributor, retailer and consumer.”
Dreamer has been developing interactive TV applications for nearly a decade. Dreamer’s technology is deployed by the two largest IPTV providers in South Korea to deliver interactive TV services to more than one million subscribers.
