Cyan, creators of the revolutionary game Myst, and Strata, the developer of the 3D software used to create Myst, announced today the Kickstarter "Become the Strata 3D Artist" level to fund Cyan's new Obduction game. Sponsors will receive a special "Myst" edition of Strata's Design 3D CX app - a $600 value, which includes libraries of some of the original Myst surface textures and 3D models.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the launch of Myst, one of the best-selling computer games in history, created using Strata 3D graphics. Myst was so revolutionary that it was recently added to the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Obduction will take what Cyan knows about creating deeply immersive worlds and apply it to an entirely new game with fantastic scenery, incredible architecture, compelling story, and exceptional challenges. Funding of over $750,000 has already been committed. The Strata backer level will help push the project to its full funding goal.
"A lot of things have changed over the last 20 years," states Rand Miller, co-founder of Cyan and one of the creative geniuses behind Myst. "What hasn't changed is the desire people have for depth of experience that's easy to access - both Cyan and Strata get that."
"The latest version of our 3D application is light years ahead of what Cyan used all those years ago," said Ken Bringhurst, Strata president. "This sponsorship creates a great opportunity for a Kickstarter backer to get our app and to contribute actual 3D content - and be immortalized in - Cyan's new Obduction project."
Contributors to Obduction on Kickstarter will also get access to a special version of the Design 3D CX trial version with the original Myst rocket 3D model. Contributors only need to forward their Kickstarter "backer" receipts to Strata to gain access to the application.
